Emblematic Species
A single hectare of primary montane forest within Puyu Sacha holds more than fifty recorded tree species — a density of life that places these cloud forests among the most diverse on Earth for their altitude. Beneath that canopy lives a group of emblematic species — birds, mammals, amphibians, and flora — that give this richness a face and make the conservation value of the Andean cloud forest visible. Their presence is not merely an inventory: it is a diagnosis. These species are indicators of the ecosystem's environmental health and of its capacity to withstand and recover from human pressure and a changing climate. When they remain, the forest is working.

01
Orange-breasted Fruiteater (Pipreola jucunda)
A jewel of the cloud forest. The Orange-breasted Fruiteater is one of the most striking birds of the Andean slopes, with its vivid green plumage and brilliant orange breast. Found in the mid-elevation forests of Puyu Sacha, this frugivorous species plays a key role in seed dispersal and forest regeneration.
02
Hummingbird (Trochilidae family)
Puyu Sacha is home to 11 recorded hummingbird species, making it an exceptional site for these remarkable pollinators. From iridescent gorgets to delicate hovering flight, hummingbirds are among the most vital contributors to the cloud forest's floral diversity and ecological balance.

03
Andean Guan (Penelope montagnii)
A large, charismatic bird of the cloud forest understory. The Andean Guan moves quietly through the forest canopy feeding on fruits and leaves, and serves as an important indicator of forest health. Its presence in Puyu Sacha reflects the integrity of this well-preserved ecosystem.
04
Glass Frog (Centrolenidae family)
One of nature's most extraordinary creatures. The Glass Frog takes its name from its translucent skin, through which internal organs are visible. Found along the streams and humid vegetation of Puyu Sacha, it is a sensitive indicator of water quality and ecosystem health.

05
Woolly Monkey (Lagothrix lagotricha)
One of the most iconic mammals of the Peruvian Amazon. The Woolly Monkey is a large, highly social primate that plays a critical role as a seed disperser in the forest. Its presence in Puyu Sacha is a testament to the conservation status of the reserve and the connectivity of its habitat.
06
Cloud Forest Owl (Strigidae family)
Silent guardian of the night. Cloud forest owls are apex predators that regulate prey populations and maintain the ecological balance of the forest. Their calls echo through the mist-covered canopy of Puyu Sacha after dark, marking the rhythm of this thriving ecosystem.

07
Golden-headed Quetzal (Pharomachrus auriceps)
One of the most spectacular birds of the Andes. The Golden-headed Quetzal is a symbol of the cloud forest, with its iridescent green plumage and striking golden crown. Highly dependent on primary forest, its presence in Puyu Sacha is a powerful indicator of the reserve's conservation value.
08
Golden-collared Tanager (Iridosornis jelskii)
A true cloud forest gem. The Golden-collared Tanager displays a striking combination of deep blue, black, and a vivid golden collar that makes it unmistakable among the canopy. Endemic to the cloud forests of Peru and Bolivia, its presence in Puyu Sacha reflects the exceptional biodiversity of this ecosystem.

09
Golden Tanager (Tangara arthus)
Brilliant and bold. The Golden Tanager is one of the most visually stunning birds of the Andean cloud forest, with its intense yellow plumage contrasted by black wings. A social species often seen in mixed flocks, it moves through the forest in a constant search for fruit and insects.
10
Yellow-browed Tyrant (Satrapa icterophrys)
A standout member of the highly diverse Tyrannidae family. The Yellow-browed Tyrant brings a flash of color to the forest edge with its distinctive yellow eyebrow and contrasting plumage. Puyu Sacha harbors 26 recorded species of tyrant flycatchers, making it one of the richest sites for this family in the region.

11
Long-tailed Tyrant (Colonia colonus)
Unmistakable in flight. The Long-tailed Tyrant is instantly recognizable by its dramatically elongated tail feathers and dark plumage. It perches prominently on exposed branches and dead stumps at the forest edge, making it one of the most charismatic flycatchers of Puyu Sacha.
12
Chestnut-breasted Coronet (Boissonneaua matthewsii)
A jewel among hummingbirds. The Chestnut-breasted Coronet is one of the most striking pollinators of the Andean cloud forest, with its rich rufous breast and metallic green back. It is a key pollinator of the cloud forest's rich floral diversity, including the spectacular purple-flowered plants found throughout Puyu Sacha.
